How to Configure the NRGship Scanner App

Set up a Zebra handheld or iPhone/iPad so NRGship Scanner sends box dimensions, weight and photos to your packing workstation.

Before you start

Supported devices

Device Measuring Requirements
Zebra TC53, TC58, TC73, TC78 (Premium) Automatic, with Zebra's built-in 3D camera Zebra Mobile Parcel dimensioning installed (check for Zebra's Mobile Dimensioning app)
iPhone or iPad Pro with LiDAR Tap the box's corners on screen iPhone 12 Pro or later Pro model, or iPad Pro 2020 or later; iOS 17 or later

What you need from NRG Software

  • The NRGship Scanner app (Zebra: the APK or your MDM; iPhone/iPad: TestFlight or your MDM).
  • For Zebra devices, the one-time device setup barcode (a StageNow barcode).
  • A setup QR code for each scanner. It holds your endpoint address, the scanner's device ID and your authorization.

Each scanner needs its own device ID (for example PACK01 ), which ties it to a packing workstation. Decide which ID goes with which workstation before you begin.

Install and prepare the device

Zebra handhelds

  1. Install NRGship Scanner from the APK we provide or through your MDM.
  2. Scan the one-time device setup barcode. Open the StageNow app on the Zebra device and scan the barcode NRG Software provided. Wait for "Device has been successfully staged." This allows NRGship Scanner to use Zebra's dimensioning camera, and you only do it once per device.
  3. Close Zebra's Mobile Dimensioning app if it's open (swipe it away in recent apps), because only one app can use the dimensioning camera at a time.

If your company uses an MDM, NRG Software can provide the setup barcode as an MDM profile so devices are prepared automatically.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Install NRGship Scanner through TestFlight or your MDM.
  2. Open it and allow camera access when asked. It's needed for measuring, scanning box labels and taking photos.
  3. If you'll use Include location, allow location access While Using the App when asked.

Configure the app

  1. Open NRGship Scanner and go to Settings.
  2. Zebra: pull the scan trigger and aim at the setup QR code. iPhone/iPad: tap Scan setup QR code and point the camera at it.
  3. The app lists the settings it will change. Check the Device ID, then tap Apply.

If the app says the barcode can't be used, it explains why (for example, damaged or not an NRGship setup code). Ask NRG Software for a new one.

Option 2: Enter the settings by hand

Open Settings and fill in:

Setting What to enter
Endpoint URL The address NRG Software gave you. It must start with https:// ; the app adds it if you leave it out. Include the trailing /  if one was given.
Device ID This scanner's ID, e.g. PACK01 . Must match the workstation it belongs to.
Auth header name Usually Authorization .
Auth header value The key NRG Software gave you. It's shown as bullets and never displayed.

Optional settings:

Setting Default What it does
Scan box ID first On Requires a box label scan before measuring; scanning the label starts the measurement.
Units Inches Inches or centimeters for dimensions.
Require weight Off A weight must be entered (or read from a USB scale) before Add Box.
Weight unit lb Pounds or kilograms.
Include photo Off Attaches a picture of the box to each measurement.
Confirm before sending Off Zebra only: review each result and tap Send.
Sounds and vibration On Beep when saved; error tone and vibration when something needs attention.
Heartbeat / Check in every On / 5 min The scanner checks in with the server while the app is open.
Include location Off Adds the scanner's location to each heartbeat.

Settings set by your company's MDM appear greyed out with "Set by your administrator."

Test the connection

In Settings, tap Test connection. You should see "Endpoint OK" and hear a short beep, and the workstation receives a test entry for box TEST-0001 . If it fails, the message says why; see Troubleshooting below.

Using the scanner

Measure a box

  1. Scan the box label (with Scan box ID first on). On Zebra, pull the trigger; on iPhone/iPad, tap the barcode button next to Box ID. To re-scan, tap the Box ID field; its contents are selected so the next scan replaces them.
  2. Enter the weight if Require weight is on, or let the USB scale fill it in.
  3. Measure.
    • Zebra: measuring starts after the scan (or tap Add Box, or pull the trigger when Scan box ID first is off). Stand back so the whole box is in view, aim at a corner from above so the top and two sides show, hold steady, then tap ✓ to accept.
    • iPhone/iPad: tap Add Box, move the phone slowly until tracking starts, then put the dot just inside a top corner and tap +. Repeat for the next top corner along the long side, the next along the short side, and finally the floor beside the box. Check the size and tap Use. Tap ↶ to redo a point.
  4. Check the result. A short beep and the workstation's message mean it's saved. An error tone, a vibration and a Not saved message mean it wasn't; fix the problem and tap Resend, or tap Discard.

Photo of the contents

Scan the box label, then tap Take Photo before you seal the box. The photo is linked to the same box ID. Then close the box and tap Add Box to measure it.

USB scale (Zebra)

Plug a USB shipping scale (for example, a Dymo M25) into the Zebra's USB-C port with a USB-C cable or adapter. Allow access when asked, and tick Always. With Require weight on, the weight fills in when the reading is steady. The device can't charge through the same port while the scale is connected.

History

Open ⋮ → History (iPhone/iPad: … → History) to see the last 50 measurements and photos sent from this device, with ✓ (saved) or ✗ (not saved) and the workstation's message.

Troubleshooting

Message or problem What to do
Dimensioner unavailable: Access Denied (Zebra) The device hasn't been prepared. Scan the one-time device setup barcode with the StageNow app, then reopen NRGship Scanner.
Dimensioning In Use by Another App (Zebra) Close Zebra's Mobile Dimensioning app (swipe it away in recent apps) and try again.
Zebra Dimensioning framework not found The device doesn't support dimensioning. Use a Premium TC53, TC58, TC73 or TC78.
No measurement The camera couldn't measure the box. Keep the whole box in view, aim at a corner from above, use a plain cardboard box on a clear surface, and hold steady.
A side measured 0 (iPhone/iPad) Two taps landed on the same spot, or the last tap wasn't on the floor. Tap ↶ and redo the last point.
No internet connection Turn on Wi-Fi or mobile data, then tap Resend or Test connection.
Can't find the server Check the Endpoint URL in Settings for typos.
The server redirected the request to … Use the address shown as the Endpoint URL (often the same address with a trailing / ).
Secure (HTTPS) connection failed The server's SSL certificate has a problem. Contact NRG Software.
Not saved with a message from the workstation (e.g. "Box ID not found") The workstation rejected the entry. Check the box label and order, then Resend, or Discard.
This barcode can't be used because … The setup QR code is damaged or isn't an NRGship code. Ask NRG Software for a new one.
Set an https endpoint URL and the device ID first Configure the app (see above).
